Two years ago, Soraya Chemaly, self-described Type-A planning consultant and mother of three young girls, asked her doctor how to deal with kid-induced sleep deprivation and the sense she was "physically falling apart."

He suggested she spend 30 minutes a day reviving her teenage hobby of painting. Way to go, Doc.

Working "compulsively" on large canvases tacked to the wall of her home office in Washington, D.C., Chemaly, now 39, produced a collection of vivid flower heads on bright backgrounds. Then she put her marketing savvy to work, e-mailing images to Ballard Designs, the Atlanta home decor catalog, where her style grabbed wall-decor buyer Amanda Mayers.
