A New York art gallery - with help from Cleveland art historian Ellen Landau - Tuesday announced the discovery of 32 small-scale abstract paintings by Jackson Pollock, the hard-drinking, self-destructive artist widely considered the most important American painter of the 20th century.
"It's great," Landau said, speaking from the Mark Borghi Fine Art Inc. gallery in Manhattan. "This is going to help illuminate Pollock the man as well as Pollock the painter."
The paintings surfaced quietly two years ago in a storage unit of a trucking company in East Hampton, N.Y., where Herbert Matter, once a close friend of Pollock's, had placed them in 1958. Landau, the gallery and members of the Matter family kept the secret until Tuesday.
Landau said that Matter, an important photographer and graphic designer who died in 1984, received the paintings from Pollock in exchange for the artist's use of Matter's apartment and studio in Manhattan from 1946 to 1949. More…
