You want to decorate the wall, even paint scenery or something on it, but aren’t quite confident that you can pull it off? Wall stencils may be your answer. If your first reaction to “stencil” is something like “not on my wall,” take a look at some examples. The Mad Stencilist has some amazing wall decorations exhibited.
Backing up a bit from the amazing samples, how do wall stencils work? If you’ve ever used lettering stencils on a poster, you’ve got the basic idea. In the case of wall stencils, you attach the stencil to the wall using masking tape or a spray-on adhesive and paint the “holes” in the stencil with a brush or sprayer. For some wall décor, the “stencil” will actually be multiple layers which you adhere to the wall in sequence as you add more to the paint design on the wall. For example, let’s say the design is a blossoming tree or fruit-bearing tree. The first stencil might allow you to paint the branches while the second one helps you paint the blooms or fruit.
There are stencils from the simple to complex and for the novice as well as the professional. Check out our links to online stencil sources on the Wall Stencils page.
