Surrealism

4/01/2005 04:48:00 PM

Whenever I think of surreal art, the first piece that comes to mind is “the melting watch” of Salvadore Dali, or more properly called, “The Persistence of Memory” (1931). Although he has quite a collection, the bent, “melting” watch is the visual image that comes to mind for Dali. Of course there are other artists as well.

Many probably would bring up M. C. Escher too. Others may not know that Sky and Water is by Escher, but have seen it and recognize it along with other Escher works. It’s the one with geese flying and as your eye moves down the picture, the shapes of fish take over. Quite eye-catching is his Puddle where tire tracks, shoe prints, a puddle and reflection of a tree all pull at your attention.

Who hasn’t seen the Le Fils de l'Homme (Son of Man) by Rene Magritte?! If I reminded you it was the painting of the man in a suit and hat with a fruit hiding his face, would you remember it?

These aren’t the run-of-the-mill art prints you would see in your friends’ homes. You can find them in various color themes to fit your décor. Run through the gamut of surreal paintings and see if one is waiting to hang on your wall.
