Decorating Small Rooms to Look Bigger

4/12/2005 09:33:00 PM

Splash on some paint, add a mirror and enliven with a colorful art print. Those are the basics for making your tiny room feel larger. Pick your favorite darker color of paint for one of your room’s walls. Our Choosing Interior Paint Colors page can help you with that. You might also want to take a look at my blog about paint colors. Then pick a lighter color for the other three walls and the ceiling.

With the darker wall you are preparing the backdrop to a striking piece of art that you can choose from among a number of dramatic art prints. Depending on what color you choose for the darker wall, you might put Jennifer Hollack’s “Drifting Breeze I” up on the wall. You might choose Edward Darley Boit’s “Venice: Afternoon on the Grand Canal” for giving your room the expansive feel. Explore some other choices as well.
On a wall adjacent to your dark wall with art, hang a framed mirror. The mirror will reflect the painting as well as give depth and expansive ambience to your room. May your room grow!
